ABOUT THE SOLAR FARM
Preparing for an aviation future powered by more electricity.
Hawke’s Bay Airport is planning a 12-17MW solar farm on approximately 24 hectares of airport land northwest of the runways.
The project is intended to establish an important renewable energy foundation as aviation technology changes and electricity demand at the airport increases – projected to be 20 times more than it is today by 2050. It could also support Hawke’s Bay’s transition to a more resilient renewable energy future.

Has Hawke's Bay Airport decided to build the solar farm?
While no final investment decision has been made, feasibility investigations support progressing to the next phase which is going to market, to test delivery, ownership and investment models.
This is alongside ongoing workstreams which cover off aspects such as cultural, environmental, aeronautical, community and technical work, as well as consenting and approvals.
Where will the solar farm be located?
The solar farm is being developed on an approximate 24ha block of airport land, west of the main runway and north of the cross runway.
How much renewable energy could be generated?
The estimated generation capability of the Hawke’s Bay Airport solar farm is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of approximately 3,000 Hawke’s Bay households.
How have you engaged mana whenua?
Hawke’s Bay Airport has worked constructively with Mana Ahuriri Trust as mana whenua, including the preparation of a Cultural Impact Assessment (CIA) to ensure the project acknowledges the significance of Te Whanganui-a-Orotū and the wider cultural landscape in which the airport is located. The CIA is currently being considered by Mana Ahuriri.
Could reflections from the solar panels affect pilot safety?
Solar panels are designed to absorb sunlight rather than reflect it. However, because of the solar farm’s location alongside an operational airfield, potential glint and glare has been specifically assessed as part of the project’s aeronautical work.
Could the solar farm pose a risk to the surrounding environment?
Environmental effects are an important consideration in the design and consenting of the solar farm. Solar photovoltaic panels are sealed units designed for long-term outdoor use and are not expected to release chemicals into the surrounding soil or water during normal operation.
Why is the current proposal smaller than what was previously announced?
Infrastructure projects of this nature often go through several iterations as feasibility, commercial viability, technical requirements and business priorities are tested. The airport has determined that developing plans for a smaller, fit-for-purpose solar farm better aligns with our long-term requirements.
