Hawke’s Bay Airport Limited and Biodiversity Hawke’s Bay have extended their partnership, first formed in 2019, reinforcing a shared commitment to protecting and enhancing the region’s natural environment.
The renewed partnership forms part of HBAL’s wider 2035 ambition to be a diversified, regional enabler and recognised leader, with biodiversity and climate resilience embedded in the Airport’s long-term strategy.
HBAL’s Head of Marketing, Communications & Stakeholders Ben Hutton says that as the gateway to Hawke’s Bay, the Airport has a responsibility to contribute positively to the region it serves.
“Extending our partnership with Biodiversity Hawke’s Bay reflects our commitment to practical environmental action, stronger regional resilience and a future where the Airport’s growth is aligned with the wellbeing of our place.”
Biodiversity Hawke’s Bay General Manager Debbie Monahan says: “We’re delighted to extend our partnership with Hawke’s Bay Airport. Working together lets us restore rare coastal habitat at Te Taha – The Gap, engage the community, and deliver measurable biodiversity outcomes that strengthen regional resilience. Partnerships like this multiply the impact of public investment and help protect our native species and places for future generations.”
Te Taha – The Gap is a rare remnant of Napier’s shingle beach and dune ecosystem located on The Esplanade in Napier’s Westshore, that remains undeveloped due to being part of the Airport’s cross runway approach / take off splay. Restoration of the 8,000m2 area of land – designated as a Significant Natural Area (SNA) under the name ‘Esplanade Herbfield’ – is focused on rebuilding the native plant populations endemic to the area and restoring the ecosystem. More information is available on the Biodiversity Hawke’s Bay website.
A partnership highlight is the annual Biodiversity Week at Hawke’s Bay Airport, where travellers, meeters and greeters, and members of the public are invited to learn more about Hawke’s Bay’s rich and remarkable biodiversity through an interactive display and events at the Airport terminal. Details for the 2026 Biodiversity Week will be announced closer to the time.
